The Orlando Magic didn’t just win Friday night they made a statement.

With their season on the line, Orlando flipped the narrative in a major way, dominating the Charlotte Hornets 121-90 in the Eastern Conference play-in and locking in the No. 8 seed. Next stop: a first-round matchup with the top seeded Detroit Pistons starting Sunday.

Coming into this one, the storylines leaned Charlotte. The Hornets had been one of the league’s most electric surprises all year, riding a high-powered offense into the play-in picture. Orlando? A squad that spent most of the season underachieving and fighting just to stay afloat. But none of that mattered once the ball tipped.

From the jump, the Magic set a tone Charlotte never recovered from.

Paolo Banchero led Magic, dropping 25 points while stuffing the stat sheet with rebounds, assists, and defensive plays. Franz Wagner added a smooth 18, while Wendell Carter Jr. held it down in the paint with 16 points and efficient shooting that stretched the defense.

And it wasn’t just scoring it was dominance on both ends.

Orlando came out aggressive, disruptive, and locked in defensively, forcing turnovers and turning them into easy buckets. Before Charlotte could even settle in, the Magic had already ripped off multiple scoring runs and built a massive gap. By the end of the first quarter, it was already 38-16 basically a warning shot to the rest of the East.

Charlotte’s offense, which thrives on perimeter shooting, never found rhythm. The Hornets struggled to get clean looks early and couldn’t capitalize from deep, putting them in a hole they didn’t have the defensive firepower to climb out of. LaMelo Ball, usually the engine, was held quiet in the first half and never got the chance to truly impact the game when it mattered.

Meanwhile, Orlando kept pressing.

Even with a comfortable lead, the Magic stayed hungry diving for loose balls, pushing the tempo, and turning hustle plays into highlight moments. Contributions came from everywhere, including the bench, showing a level of depth and urgency that’s been missing for stretches this season.

Charlotte did show some fight late, with Ball heating up in the second half to finish with 23 points, while Miles Bridges and Brandon Miller chipped in. But by then, the damage had already been done.

This loss stings deeper for the Hornets. A promising season ends in familiar disappointment, extending their playoff drought to a decade longest in the league.

For Orlando, though, this felt like a reset.

A team that’s taken heat all year just flipped the switch at the perfect time and now they’re heading into the playoffs with momentum, confidence, and a chance to shake things up against Detroit.

If this version of the Magic shows up again, that first-round series might be a lot more interesting than people expect.
